Most traditional life insurance policies require a medical exam as part of the application process. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare can help you get the best possible results and the lowest premium rate.

The exam is usually free, conducted by a paramedical professional, and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
What the Exam Includes
A typical life insurance medical exam includes measurements of your height, weight, and blood pressure. Blood and urine samples are collected to test for cholesterol levels, blood sugar, liver and kidney function, HIV, nicotine use, and common drug substances.
The examiner will also ask about your medical history, medications, and family health history.
How to Prepare
Schedule your exam for the morning when blood pressure and cholesterol readings tend to be most favorable. Fast for 8 to 12 hours beforehand for the most accurate blood test results. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and salty foods for at least 24 hours before the exam.
Stay well-hydrated, get a good night’s sleep, and avoid strenuous exercise the day before.
What If Results Are Unfavorable?
If your exam results place you in a higher risk category, you have options. You can request reconsideration if there were extenuating circumstances, apply with a different insurer that may view your results more favorably, or work on improving your health and reapply later.
Some conditions improve with treatment, and reapplying after documented health improvements can lead to better rates.
